With “The Colours of Dunhuang- The Magical Door Opening to silk Road” exhibition which will be opened in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center, the art of Dunhuang Grottoes will be exhibited in the World –out of China- at the first time. MSFAU will organize this exhibition in the 2012- 2013 Chinese- Turkish Culture Year with T.C. Ministery of Culture and Tourism, Chinese Ministery of Culture, Dunhuang Academy and China Arts & Entertainment Group for narrating the Dunhuang Grottoes which are in the world culture heritage of China. As an example of the cultural tolerance and artistic depth, in the “The Colours of Dunhuang- The Magical Door Opening to Silk Road”, the paintings and the sculptures of the Dunhuang Caves will be presented in the MSFAU Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center. Through the exhibition, music and dance performances as well as the academic conferences about Dunhuang and Silk Road will be organized. The exhibition will be open between 15 November- 7 Ocak 2013.

The exhibition consists of five components:

I. Spatial Dunhuang
Dunhuang located in 40 degrees north latitude, 92 degrees east longitude, is a city on the ancient Silk Road. Since Emperor Wu of Han founded Dunhuang County in 111 BC, Dunhuang had always been a multi-ethnic, multicultural city. Dunhuang Grottoes is a general name for all the Grottoes in the area, including the Mogao Grottoes, West Thousand Buddha Caves, Yulin Grottoes in Guazhou County, East Thousand Buddha Caves and the 812 caves in Subei County.

II. Millenial Dunhuang
This part presents Dunhuang in the span of the time, showing the representative art from each period, as well as the foreign cultural elements. Dunhuang art is not only an outcome of Chinese culture and assimilation and absorption of the art of other cultures, but also a model of global exchanges and artistic blend of East and West. It contains the skills of the ancient Greek and roman art, the subject matter of the Buddhism, traces of Gandhara art, style of mid- Asia, art of central China. It vividly display, the process and panorama of social development, inclusive of the different historical periods of political, economic, cultural, science and technology, music, dance, sports, ethnic, folk and friendly exchanges between Chinese and foreign people as well as other precious and rich historical information.

III. Nirvana of Buddha, Dream of Tangchoo
This part represents one of the most representative caves of the Dunhuang Grottoes. The famous huge Nirvana Reclining Buddha of Cave 158 (Mogao caves, mid- Tang dynasty) reproduced in accordance with the 4/5 scale will be lying on the rear of the exhibition hall, with wonderful details of paintings or painted sculptures to show the great merging power of the Tang dynasty.

IV. Superlative Craftsmanship, Recovering Original Appearance
This part is an area for integrated presentation, showing four representative caves of different historical periods.

V. Interactions
This section is based on the exhibition space, an independent interactive space for people to understand and love Dunhuang. To increase the interactivity of the exhibition, there will be some interactive activities such as giving away education manuals, art puzzles, photographic plates etc.
The directors and the curatorships of the exhibition are Fan Jinshi, Luo Huaqing from Dunhuang Academy; Wan Jiyuan, Peter Huang, Ma RuiQing from China Arts & Entertainment Group and Prof. Caner Karavit from MSFAU.
